Years 5 & 6

AUTUMN TERM

Year 5 and 6 have had a busy start to the new academic year. We began the first week with a paired challenge called ‘Salvage!’ based on survival on a desert island with only a few possessions rescued from a sinking ship. It proved very interesting the items saved and the uses they could be put to! Overall it was a great activity to get everyone thinking ‘out of the box’ and to settle in to a new classroom.

Our topic this term is ‘Achievements and Legacies’. We began by thinking about some of the greatest inventions and our own personal achievements. The topic will cover the historical timeline from the Stone Age to Modern Times in Britain and we shall also look at some of the legacies of ancient societies with a particular focus on the Ancient Greeks who gave us democracy, mathematics and the Olympic Games.

To complement our topic, we shall be reading ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis – an adventure-fantasy novel set during the Second World War – featuring real and mythical characters and creatures.

We have ventured into the art world by looking at the legacy left by the famous artist Pablo Picasso and produced portraits of ourselves as Picasso might have painted us – the results are rather interesting! Linking to the Stone Age, we have also designed and made clay stone pots which are getting ready for the kiln – watch this space for the results….
